It’s no secret that the search functionality of WordPress isn’t all it could be. Without the ability to index custom post types, custom fields, shortcode content, or PDF documents — not to mention returning results sorted by date rather than relevance — there’s a good chance your readers won’t be able to find what they’re looking for on your website.
Even if the exact content they’re searching for exists on the site! If you want to give your visitors what they’re looking for, it’s time to upgrade the WordPress search tool by installing a dedicated plugin. Is an excellent option for doing this. In this review, we’ll take a look at its features and see how easy it is to use in order to help you decide if it’s the right choice for your website. The Benefits of Using SearchWP SearchWP has been built to help WordPress users offer their visitors a fully-functioning search tool.
By installing this plugin on your website, your visitors will be able to find more of your content, thereby improving their user experience. As a result, this should give you an extended opportunity to forge a better relationship with them. Here’s a quick list of some of the most impressive features of SearchWP:. Post meta indexing (titles, descriptions, keywords).
PDF document content indexing. Media file display in search results. Keyword weight control. Selective indexing.
Search statistics. Growing library of extensions. After installing SearchWP, instead of displaying search results according to post date, your results will be returned according to relevance with the ability to include a wider range of content types.
Another notable feature of SearchWP, which helps improve the search functionality of your site, is its ability to use keyword stemming. This allows users to enter in a search term, such as “run”, with the plugin being smart enough to return results including related words, such as “running”, or “runner”.
You can also create supplemental search engines, which work independently of the main site-wide search engine. This could be used to allow users to search a single custom post type — such as products on an e-commerce store — without returning blog post content in the results. SearchWP is developer friendly, making use of hooks to allow customization without impacting the core plugin code. This also future-proofs any modifications that are made, preventing them from being overwritten when the plugin is updated. Now that we’ve taken a look at some of the most useful features of SearchWP, it’s time to see how easy it is to implement — helping you decide whether it’s an essential upgrade for your WordPress site.
How to Get Started With SearchWP After installing and activating SearchWP, the plugin will build the search index for your site. How long this takes depends on how much content your website has and whether you choose to index PDF documents or not.
Once this is completed, you can access the plugin settings to configure how SearchWP will work on your site. Through the single settings page, you can choose which post types to include in the search index and are therefore displayed to visitors performing a search on your website. Including or excluding a post type, such as pages, or any custom post type you’ve created on your site is as easy as checking or unchecking a box. SearchWP also makes it very easy to add weighting to the individual elements that make up a post. These weighting options include the post title, content, slug or URL, and any taxonomies or custom fields in use.
The plugin comes pre-populated with weightings. However, you’re free to modify these to meet your own individual requirements. This gives you the ability to exclude certain elements — e.g., the excerpt. As SearchWP allows visitors to search the contents of custom fields, any of these fields that are active on your site — including those from other plugins or any that you’ve created yourself, — can be given a weighting too. With SearchWP, you can index the media that has been uploaded to your site so that it can be returned in the search results. In addition to including images and other media files, SearchWP also has the ability to index the contents of PDF documents.
Specific file types can also be excluded from search results. When media files are displayed in the search results, your visitor can conveniently click through to the post that contains that file, rather than just viewing the files on the results page. Once the initial index has been created, and you’ve configured the plugin, there’s nothing else to do. SearchWP will handle all search duties on your website, without the need for you to update existing or add new search forms to your pages. The search result pages will still the look the same — but now they’ll now be populated with much more relevant content.
SearchWP Statistics As soon as the plugin is up and running on your website, it’ll start gathering statistics about how your visitors are using the search tool. The statistics include:. Number of searches over the past 30 days. Popular searches by day, week, month, and year. Failed searches This is useful data to have access to, since you can see what your readers are interested in, and then make the links to that content more prominent.
This data can also indicate that your visitors are thirsty for more information on certain topics, which you can quench by adding more content on those topics. Extensions and Add-ons If you want to extend the functionality of SearchWP, there are for the plugin.
These extensions include adding live-search to your forms, including support for multilingual content, activating fuzzy matches to support more lenient search queries, and carrying out on-site diagnostics to help you keep an eye on the SearchWP index, and much more. The official extensions are available to download for all SearchWP license holders. SearchWP Pricing SearchWP is a premium plugin and is available with three licenses:. Single site: $49. Business (5 sites): $129. Developer (unlimited sites): $249 All options include one year of support and access to automatic updates, as well as access to all extensions.
Licenses can be renewed with a 30% discount after expiration. Conclusion There are many benefits of using the SearchWP plugin to improve — or even fix — the core WordPress search feature. By making it easier for your readers to find more of the content they’re interested in, you can increase the time they spend on your website, which in turn improves the chances of turning one-time visitors into subscribers, clients, or customers.
If you’re building websites for clients with WordPress, adding SearchWP is a surefire way to eliminate support calls from disgruntled site owners related to the “broken” search functionality. With a one-time setup process and automatic replacement of the core WordPress search tool, adding SearchWP to your site is highly recommended. Find out more about SearchWP on the.
Already using SearchWP? Considering it?
Search hurts – if you don’t have it. If your competitors have better search on their sites, you’re behind. Besides, competitors or not, a good search bar helps visitors find what they need. WordPress does have a native search function.
Although it’s not as bad as it once was, the default search isn’t exciting. There are several plugins that do it better, all while offering extra features bound to boost your site. In this post, I’ll talk about why having a good search bar is a great thing for your site. Then I’ll look at five plugins that beat WordPress’s default search. Why Search Matters Search exists so that people who find your site can find what’s on your site. Visitors are always looking to navigate to content that interests them in as little time as possible. Search is one path leading to that goal – embrace it.

Subpar search scares visitors off. If someone lands on your site, glances around and stays interested, then you’ve already done a lot of hard work. But if that person goes to the search bar and punches in a query that returns nothing useful, then they’re likely to go away.
And something else will go away, too: all your hard work. Beyond the functional aspect of search, there exists a simple expectation that it will work well. We’re in the age of Google. Modern search is like a shiny sink with running water and adjustable temperature: we get what we want on demand, with little work. Bad search is like barking at visitors to snatch a leaky bucket, trudge a few miles south and fetch water from a muddy creek.
It’s not what we’re used to. It shocks our expectations. But enough negativity from me – at least for a few sentences, anyway! There’s a positive reason to get great search: analytics.
Search shouldn’t just sit there. You can observe it, analyze it, mold it. Search analytics – now a part of many WordPress search plugins – feed you data about what your users search for and what they do after results appear.
You can harness the power of search analytics to keep people on your site and funnel them where you want them to go. (To learn how you can effectively employ search analytics, see.) Why WordPress Search Isn’t Ideal Why am I ranting about how important good search is?
Simple: WordPress’s default search isn’t that good. It used to be far worse. For years, WordPress returned search results not by relevance, but by date. WordPress 3.7 patched that up. But the default search is far from perfect.
While it’s more advanced, the algorithm is still pretty simple. On top of that, you can’t index custom post types (for instance, a portfolio post type) for searching. It’s still rather “meh.” Moreover, sticking with the default search denies you search analytics – that’s a bad deal. So what’s the alternative?
You can even choose. ? I’ll now go over five plugins (in no special order) that will give you better onsite search. I’ll get this one out of the way first, because I’m technically cheating – it’s not a plugin. Google Custom Search isn’t limited to WordPress. It’s available to any website, but I want to include it because it’s a decent option. Besides, there that help you set it up.
Once you have Google Custom Search up and running (here’s an article ), it works just like normal Google search. You get the same awesome search functionality, just for your site:.
See search terms bolded in results. Get autocomplete for search queries.
Link to to get search statistics for your site. Customize the look of the search bar and results page to fit your site’s design.
Return relevant results, backed by the power of Google Here’s the big downside: you also get ads. To access more features and remove Google’s ads, you’ll have to pay $100 per year. Relevanssi, created by, is the most popular and well-known WordPress search plugin. Its purpose is in the name: relevance. Beyond returning results that actually matter, Relevanssi has a number of sweet features. Here are a few:. Fuzzy matching (the search engine will search for partial words – a search for “blog” will include results for “blogging”).
An option to exclude certain posts, pages, tags and categories from results. AND and OR search modifiers. Autocomplete suggestions For search analytics, the plugin logs user queries.
That’s useful information. The free version of Relevanssi is fantastic (we’ve on the ManageWP blog). You can go premium for a one-time payment of $39.95. It nets you some cool. Let’s talk about pricing right away with this one – because you can’t get away from it. SearchWP doesn’t come for free: its premium version is its only version.
SearchWP, which was built by New York web developer, touts itself as “the best WordPress search plugin.” While I’m not entirely convinced of that, many people are and they’re willing to pay $29 per year for it. SearchWP does have a phenomenal array of features:. Fuzzy matching. Keyword weight control (you can specify how much weight the search algorithm gives to words in post titles, post content, specific fields, etc.). PDF indexing. An option to disable search on any post type, any category or any tag.
In-depth site statistics. Even more – just check 4. Like every plugin we’ve looked at so far, yolink promises relevance in the results it spits back. It also boasts a few great features:. Highlighted search terms on the results page. An option to exclude certain kinds of content from the results.
Multisite support Here’s the downer: no search analytics. That disappointed me. I’m inclined to say that yolink just doesn’t offer as many great features as the other plugins on this list.
I’m hard-pressed to explain what yolink’s big advantage is. But maybe you disagree. Let me know in the comments at the end of the article! This is an awesome plugin that a couple of helpful commenters suggested on.
Swiftype Search runs on its own server, so it doesn’t slow your site down. That alone is pretty cool.
Here are some of the other features it offers, a few of which are unique:. Autocomplete search suggestions. Fuzzy matching. A drag-and-drop interface that lets you reorder the results for any keyword. Faceted search: it lets searchers filter results by date, author, location, content type and more Swiftype Search is powerful.
It’s also pricey: there’s a free plan, but it places Swiftype Search branding on the search bar and results page. The pro plan costs $19 per month. Conclusion WordPress’s default search improved with WordPress 3.7, but it’s still not great – there are far better tools.
Autocomplete, fuzzy matching, advanced customization and – best of all – search analytics are all terrific tools. They’ll improve your search and thus improve your site. These are all decent plugins – some of them are amazing. To see how relevant the results are for your own site, you’ll have to test them for yourself. In the comments below, let us know how it goes!

Austin Great list of search options. We’ve used Google Custom Search on a few of our sites with great results.
There are a bunch of good frontend search options on WordPress, but our problem was not finding an option for backend searches – like when you’re trying to find a line of code, as an alternative to having to open each css file individually to find it. We couldn’t find a workable solution, so we built one!
Our plugin has been helpful for speeding up editing, for those instances where you know the line of code, or snippet or string, but don’t know what file it’s hiding in. Now you can search all the Theme or Plugin files at once. If it sounds helpful, check it out: wpbackendfilesearch.com. Dong Thanh Augustino Dear mate, thank for your post a lot!
However, I have a question to you. I hope you could help me to find the good way to complete my website.
Do you know any search plugin is able to save the keyword query to WordPress? I am developing a dictionary in WordPress.
I would like to find a good plugin that when the user could not find their keywords in my side. Those keywords will be saved in WordPress then I will add the meaning for it. I am sorry that my English not good. Looking forward to hearing good news from you! Ned I’ve used all of these over the years on my employer’s website and each seems to have something it does really well, but none of them was ever a great fit. For a lot of the most common searches, we knew which content we wanted to show users, and improvements to the algorithm weren’t really solving the problem.
Swiftype was the best for our use case, as we could pin items to the top for specific searches, but implementing it in any meaningful way outside of the live-search feature it offers on the default search box was a pain. We needed something that would let us do the following for specific search terms 1. Pin results, 2. Redirect to a specific page and bypass the search results if we wanted, and 3. Make excluding content easy on both a per-post and taxonomy level.
I ended up having one built to do what we wanted, and it’s now on the WordPress repository in case anybody else finds it useful. Paul Hi, I’m looking for a Search plugin that allows me to control what content I search through for each Search within my site. If I can explain I have a site which will have many sub-sites. It will eventually be set up so that a user enters the site and then navigates to a specific sub-site based on where they are in the UK, eg. If they live in Bristol, they would go to the pages and so on.
In each of these ‘areas’ I need the Search within that area to only find results in pages that have been tagged with the ‘bristol’ ID, so a user can search for ‘plumber’ for example, within the Bristol pages, and only be returned plumber pages with the ID ‘bristol’. I need this to work for multiple areas such as Bristol, Reading, Swindon, London etc. So, effectively different searches in etc Essentially I need a Search plugin that supports multiple Search forms, each of which is capable of searching a sub-set of my site pages for a particular string entered in that particular form.
Hope this makes sense. Sorry, but I am really new to WordPress and I’m not sure if all the terminology I’ve used above is correct, but hopefully you can let me know of a plugin that you could recommend that may do this. I’m not having much luck finding one, as I’m not really sure how to try and search for the plugin I want (irony I suppose!) Many thanks, Paul.
Imagine you’re a teacher with a simple WordPress site. You’re getting excited about the new school year yet you’d like to give your students some digital-friendly documents for them to prepare for classes and understand the material. Your first order of business is to share the class rubric with all of the assignments and tests throughout the semester. You have the PDF file, but you’re unable to make it all that printer-friendly as a blog post or page.
